Feedback + Case Study Findings
From feedback from last class period on February 23, there was concern where I wanted to take my prospectus more specifically. What I found interesting from a literature review that I was reading that day was the design ideas around the baptistry within the Catholic church. This actually created a conversation alone about the difference between the Catholic church baptistry vs the Baptist church. Maybe not the baptistry in particular, but there are a lot of options in the design field about the way the modern church is laid out.
Because I wanted to take an approach through the lens of technology, it is not a bad pivot to look at a common aspect within the different churches whether because of the impact of technology or just the impact of the modern day. There is a very different approach in each denomination, with a lot of options to narrow down on. I may start with the baptistry and see where that takes me.
On another note, through evaluation of a previously completed capstone project called "Rekindling Hearth" by Prenzler, it created ideas about how I could focus on one particular idea and have all the research revolve around it. Because I have a lot of articles about the effects of technology in the church, an avenue from there would be helpful. Maybe looking at the view from the camera? Or the change in structure of the church because of the technology that has been imposed heavily by COVID 19?
Like I said, there are many different avenues, but all ideas have good case studies that can be used and can impose drawings and analytical diagrams as well. I am headed in the right direction, just not jumping the gun right away because there hasn't been something that specific that has grabbed my attention fully. In the meantime, the more literature reviews the better. Case studies are also something I am reviewing carefully and seeing if there is a certain one I can further in my studies.
Hi Ryan. This is Jennifer. I am limited in my knowledge of religious practice and religious architecture but contemporary events impacting religious worship spaces is real. Technology and Covid-19 certainly but also safety/security related to gun violence. Kim Furlong, IARD, was examining the mid century churches on our campus and she tied changing design features to experiences resulting from WWII. You might chat with her? It could be that you choose churches (not many, 2 or 3) that have undergone significant changes and follow their response to what is happening in the world (science, politics, religious doctrine, religious leadership). Professor Holland points out the breadth of the topic and you could narrow the changes or you could narrow the number of churches examined? As I typed this, I also thought of lighting in churches (typically for attention and drama) being altered for technology (a friend complains regularly that people reading scripture need to turn down the brightness). Two technologies interacting?
